CHAPTER

NINETEEN

Logan didn't make the morning run, and he was feeling guilty about it, mostly because that meant Reggie went on her own. And while he knew his partner could take care of herself in most situations, he should have gone with her. His reason for not going was purely selfish. He was sure Nora and he were finished, but she showed up at his apartment wearing a slinky pink dress, high heels and a smile that could only be interpreted one way. Knowing that he'd skipped the run because he and Nora were finishing up their night activities with a morning finale made him feel even more like a heel.

Logan picked up the coffee he'd poured himself in the breakroom and remembered that it tasted like dishwater. Either someone washed the coffeepot and never bothered to rinse it, or they were buying bargain coffee grounds. Might have been a combination of both. Every time the door opened to the precinct; he looked up to see if it was Reggie. She was late. Not super late but enough to make him want to kick himself for being so worried and for flaking out on the run. He was making ridiculous promises in his head about how he'd never have sex again as long as Reggie walked through the door in the next five minutes. He'd never miss a run again, and he'd stop eating steaks as long as she was all right. Most of those hard-to-keep resolutions fell away, along with the tension in his muscles, when she sashayed inside nibbling a muffin.

Logan focused back on the list of podcasts Fran had sent him. She let him know she was too swamped to go through each one, so he decided to open each one and read through the topic lists. He was focusing on the Harrington House murders, not because the other murder was less important but because the Westcott murders had been a much bigger deal in the papers. There was no mention of it on any lists.

Reggie pulled out her chair, dropped her backpack under the desk and sat down. "I was thinking we should put up the evidence boards with both murders to find the connection."

"It's going to be a pretty sad board. The evidence is slim. I suppose we could pin up a black hooded sweatshirt."

"Someone is grumpy this morning. Maybe you should give Hannah a call and get things going again." She stared at him as she took a bite of muffin.

"You certainly are obsessed about my relationship with Nora. And, for your information, she's the reason I didn't make the run this morning." Logan took some joy in the fact that she seemed genuinely disappointed that Nora was back in his life.

She laughed and covered her mouth to keep crumbs from spraying out. "Obsessed, hardly. It's entertaining, that's all."

"My sex life is entertaining?"

"How the hell should I know?" She took another bite of muffin. "In fact, I don't want to know."

"Is that banana nut?" he asked.
